Susan Resneck Pierce spent a highly valuable day with the Hendrix Board of Trustees in a retreat setting orienting them to their fundamental responsibilities as trustees and stewards of the institution. It had been more than a decade since the Hendrix Board held an off-site retreat, and most current trustees had never received this kind of education for their role. Susan prepared for the retreat by reading volumes of materials provided by Hendrix and holding individual conversations with most members of the Executive Committee and all members of the Senior Leadership Team, along with multiple sessions with me and the Special Assistant to the President. The Board took theory to practice by implementing Susan’s tools on the second day of the retreat as trustees dug deeply into the process to set strategic direction for Hendrix on the eve of its sesquicentennial. Susan’s leadership was invaluable in resetting expectations for the work of our Board at a time when that work is perhaps more important than it has ever been.
